Happy Spring from Maggie Valley Club & Resort!
Well, the flowers and the season are in full bloom! Even our seasonal members are beginning to sprout up - we welcome you back! We are happy to see you and more activity around the Club after a long winter!
We have a lot of exciting things coming up this season; our Activities Calendar is full of things to do for members and guests alike! New additions include Zumba and Pilates; we’ve added an extra week of Kids’ Camp this summer, and a lot of the old favorites are back, like Doggie Playdate, bi-weekly Hikes and Trivia Night! Be sure to check our website for a current list of upcoming events. Remember, we need your participation to make these events successful. Let us know if there are activities we don’t have on the calendar that you’d like to participate in the coming months- this is your Club!
As I’ve mentioned before, we’ve made a transition to a new Point-of-Sale system in all of our departments. I want to encourage you to present your Member cards when visiting the Club. This is very important as your card prompts us to your specific member discounts. We appreciate your patience; it is a team effort to make sure our Club runs smoothly.
We have a new face in our Pro Shop- please welcome Trey Smith as our new Assistant Golf Professional! Trey is no stranger to Maggie Valley Club; he has worked for the past 3 years on our Golf Maintenance Team. He brings a wealth of experience with him, having worked for a number of years as a Golf Professional in Birmingham, AL. We are excited to have him as part of our Golf Team!
Many of you have asked how the Club is doing, and I just want to remind everyone that it is vital that our members utilize the Club and all it has to offer. We need your support to continue doing what we do. As in any Club, the lifeblood is membership. We are always looking to add members to our family. A fuller membership helps keeps the overall cost and dues down for everyone. Our golf course and restaurant are open to the public as well, so I encourage you to come out and experience Maggie Valley Club & Resort! We have a great Club and an excellent staff, and we look forward to another successful season in 2011!
As always, please do not hesitate me if I can be of any assistance in any way,
and if you have comments, questions or concerns.

Cardiovascular workout- any activity that leaves you slightly short of breath and works up a bit of sweat is great for your cardiovascular system, or heart. In addition to lowering harmful cholesterol, it also helps speed up your metabolism, making weight loss easier. A round of golf burns about 300 calories in a 150 lb. individual who plays for 1 hour while carrying clubs. The driving range burns about 200 cal. per hr.
Proper exercise- weight-bearing exercises are great for your bones. Weight-bearing exercises 2– to 3-times a week can create long, lean muscle mass, which helps support a strong skeleton. This type of exercise can also help prevent bone degeneration, including osteoporosis.
Plenty of Vitamin D- this vitamin is essential for strong bones: it regulates the amount of calcium and phosphorus in the blood. Vitamin D also helps regulate the growth of skin cells. While you can eat some foods that are high in Vitamin D, your body can actually make all the Vitamin D it needs just by catching some rays outside. So go outside, take a walk around the links and let your body do its work.
Sleep Better- study after study has shown that regular exercise increases the positives that sleep brings. You’ll fall asleep faster and remain in a deep sleep for a longer period of time with regular exercise, which includes activities like golf. Sleep is important because it allows time for your muscles to repair themselves. Playing a round of golf by day will likely increase the quality of restfulness by night.
Find New Friends- Golf is a social game. There’s plenty of time to chat with new friends and get to know new ones. Making friends increases endorphins, which helps mental outlook and an overall feeling of well-being. Studies have shown that seniors who remain social and friendly live up to six years longer than those who don’t. So get out there, get some exercise and make new friends!
